The first thing to remember when calculating the odds in craps is the number of possible outcomes, i.e. 36. Each will produce a number between 2 and 12. Not all craps odds are equal. The 7 is the number that dominates with six possibilities of making it out, five ways of having a 6 and an 8, the 5 and 9 with four possibilities, three for the 4 and the 10, and two ways of rolling a 3 and an 11. In other words, there are 6 combinations that will add up to 7, or one in six chance of rolling a 7.

So there are only 11 possible totals (2 to 12), but there are 36 combinations that can result.To win a Pass the Line bet, you must roll a seven or an 11. This means that you have 6 and 2 for a total of 8 of the 36 possible combinations. If you roll a 2 etc or 12, you lose the bet. This means that out of 4 out of 36 times, you will lose. So the 12 of the 36 times, you are either going to win or lose. Whether it is one or the other, it is time for the Odds bets to come into play.

Following a “come out roll”, a point has been automatically established. The odds of rolling this point again are much smaller, compared to 7. For example, if your point is 5, your odds of rolling this point again are only 4 to 36, compared to 6 to 36 of going out.
